I recently got my hands on some MDF 28mm scaled sci-fi buildings from Knights of Dice. If you're in Australia, you've likely heard of the KoD gear - it is really good. These particular buildings came in several different floor prints, ranging from rectangular and square and even a L-shaped structure.
Initially I was a little of sparce on the paper, but I saw the errors in my ways and covered the walls etc completely. |
Normally I would treat such things like any other project, painting it up with spray paint then hand painting. Instead, I rummaged through my stash of papercraft building project offcuts, the leftover pieces from past projects. I only needed to print out a few more pages to get enough materials - yeah I had a lot of offcuts! I mainly focused on red and orange hues to maintain a cohesive colour palette. It evokes a sense of an industrial yet vibrant sci-fi world, which is absolutely my wheelhouse gaming-wise.
I started layering these offcuts onto the surfaces of the buildings. The process wasn't planned, and I embraced the randomness of it all. Using Mod Podge adds a slightly glossy texture, which works in a sci-fi setting. It also acts as a protective coat, helping all the layers stay put hopefully for many years to come. While my creations might not have the intricate details of a greeble and paint job, they certainly hold their own on the tabletop. The result is pretty unique which is always welcome in a game.
I suppose this was a case of prioritising fun and creativity over precision. Nothing wrong with that at all, because first and foremost this is a hobby. Who knows, I may even do some more one day.
