Club Games Day - MARS for the Day

Axes & Ales is a not-for-profit incorporated association here in Victoria Melbourne. We're run by our members for our members, so all the money we collect as membership fees is pumped straight back into the club. Our primary 'thing' is our Tuesday club nights, however, we try and put on a few events during the course of the year.

During July we held a games day. Nothing complicated, just a whole lot of people getting together and playing a variety of board games. The latest edition of Warhammer 40,000 got a good showing, but it wasn't the only kid in town. My friends and I got our act together and ran three tables of Mars Code Aurora. It was a lot of fun, and it was great to see my mates going that extra mile to field their own unique teams and finish and share their newest terrain items.

I used my Typhoon Company minis employing the Brutality Faction. I tweaked my list a little between games as I got to better appreciate some of the rules, but largely stuck with the same Team I had last used when playing Mars. I also made my own Cards (see below) which is always good for a game.

One good thing about playing a series of games on a day was I got to test out and tweak my Brutality list. Originally, I had my Krut Tiger-Disciples kitted out with Cammo in a sniper role. What I didn't count on was the 40cm range of their Qi Rifles meaning they couldn't take advantage of being able to avoid being targeted beyond 40cm. After a game I realised that them being Snake-Disciples with Qi Cannons made a lot more sense (with their 70cm range), but at extra cost and having to forego their Shock-Gauntlets. I hadn't considered the 15cm range when issuing Officer Commands either - something that changed my deployment etc during later games.

Here are some photos of the terrain for your viewing pleasure:

This Blue and White Terrain was Brendan's great work. It's wooden blocks and cardboard, all hand-cut and looking awesome. He was rightly proud of his work and it was great to play with.

James had amassed a motley collection of spaceships. Talk about awesome.

I also brought my mdf terrain collection out as well. Works nicely and I'm starting to consider getting a few extra pieces for my collection.

I should have made some notes of what happened, but I was too busy playing!
