Club Swap and Games Meet

Axes & Ales, my very local games club, hosted a great event today - a swap meet followed by an opportunity to play games. I sold at a lot of stuff, many things that I had been holding onto for way too long. While I got a few dollars for them, more importantly, I let things go (hoarding isn't good for your health) and brought some delight to some others. Much like the delight I got from some of the purchases I made. Let me share with you some of my finds...

Necromunda Van Saars

Necromunda is a Games Workshop skirmish game that has been around for a while now. There are lots of different factions, one of which is called Van Saars - amongst the more techno factions in the game. I picked up this collection of 10 models for a few bucks a pop. They can do with some more work, but the base paint job is done, perfect for another gang in one of the many skirmish games I play like F28 and Mars Code Aurora.

Corporate Marines

A little while ago I pained up some soldiers. I've been looking for some more metal ones from the range, however, one of my friends' David had some of the Reaper Bones plastic ones available. So now I've got 4 heavier dudes (Marines) and 7 standard soldiers from the range. I'll do something with them in due course.

Space Marine and Scouts

David also had some Space Marine Scouts and another Tech Marine (I think). I'll do some work on the Scouts and use them in my Lost Patrol game box - I've been looking for the right models for a long time now. I'm not sure what I'll do with the Marine on the rock, but its such a lovely metal model... it deserves some love and attention.

Eldar Wave Serpent

Another friend swapped some stuff with me and passed over this modified Wave Serpent. Ben's done a great job adding blades to the body - it looks ace. Magnetised and undercoated, it's ready for painting, one day 😏 maybe soon.

Hand-held Airbrush Kit

I've had a basic airbrush kit from Aldi I was given for my birthday years ago. Since then I've played around with some different brushes (which is what the metal gun things are called) and paints. Airbrushes are useful for lots of things but boy are they fiddly buggers - you've got to keep them soooo  clean, the paint actually goes off... there are heaps of things which make them very frustrating. Anyhow, while I don't use them too often, they do come in handy, even if only to lay down some base colours. This mini airbrush compressor (it charges via a USB) hopefully makes using my brush a little bit more convenient.

28mm Eldar

I've been slowly collecting Eldar, not that I have really played much W40k, but I do like the aesthetic. I purchased two metal Eldar Rangers (4th Edition, sculpts I don't have), a metal Karandras (2nd Edition, which I might already have, I wasn't really sure), and an Avatar of Khaine (1991 vintage, metal) - there are a number of different sculpts about, this is one of the smaller. I also got 9 jet bikes - they looked better on the day than they do now, so I might reconsider whether I retain them or otherwise.

Metal Terminators

I've been collecting metal Terminators over the last couple of years with the intention of using them in my Space Hulk set. Currently, I've 10 plastic Terminators painted up - their paint job is pretty good but the minis themselves aren't anything special. The metal Terminators are much more interesting, with lots of detail on their armour etc, I think that with this last haul (which are actually Space Wolf Terminators) I'll finally have enough bodies, arms, and legs to make a full set of two squads of 5, each with a Captain, a heavy weapon (all Flamers in 2nd Edition rules) and three troopers.

Epic Eldar Haul

Games Workshop had a game called Epic, Space Marine and a few other titles/releases - really small 6mm scale - using tiny figures. I played the game a few times back in the early 1990s but haven't done any more since. It was/is a really interesting game, with some fascinating mechanics. I've kept a few of the pieces since those days - see the second picture below, nothing too special - and have always wanted to get back into the game and play some more. So let's have a look at what was to be had:

  1. This is a mighty haul of stuff! I think that marine guy is a Space Wolf techmarine - he's called something like an "Iron Priest". I really like the old Eldar, and the van Saar are very nice models too.

  2. There was a lot of stuff. One annoying thing was that some of those 28mm Eldar included resin-printed pieces - the Karandras head and claw disintegrated when I tried to strip the paint from them :-( there's a learning for next time - there's likely a reason people swamp their extensive mini collections in crappy paint.
