Inq28 Game

A few weekends back my mates and I got together and played a Inq28-styled game*. It was a lot of fun, all the more so because we're not the type of people to get overly concerned with winning and losing, rather we just focused upon the game at hand and enjoyed each others' company.
Got to love this photo filter - nice huh?
*What is Inq28? Almost 20 years ago, Games Workshop released Inquisitor (link), a wargame set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe, but employing larger 54mm miniatures/models and a more detailed (not necessarily better, but different) rules/game engine.  The action was focused on Inquisitors and their henchmen and games employed fewer figures than the norm at the time. Fast-forward to 2021, and the term "Inq28" broadly implies similar narrative-focused, skirmish (read low model count) games, set within the same universe but employing commonly available 28mm scales miniatures.

We played our game using our own slight variation of 4-player Kill Team. To account for the varied forces and abilities associated with Inquisitor Retinues, we allowed that units from any factions could be selected as long as their armour save wasn't better than +3 and the total point cost was less than 75-points. Specialisms weren't permitted, nor were Factions. We didn't use Command Points, instead drawing cards from a deck of 200 (?) that one of my mates made - basically if you could think of an in-game effect, chances are it is included in one of the cards. Beyond that anything pretty much goes.

When it comes to Kill Team, I'm not great at the rules, so I invested a bit of time and effort into preparing a 1-pager 'roster' that turned out very well - I felt that little more invested in the game because of it. Here's an example of the type of game aid I had prepared:

For the game on the day, I jammed my entire team onto a single A4 page like this:

Yes, some of the names are corny 😁

The game was set in some sort of village/outpost where the four Inquisitors had landed, seeking information from the locals. As an Action, a local could be interrogated, which yield either points or an event, determined by drawing a card from a standard deck. The first person to get the requisite points won or the last man standing won the game. Pretty simple.

It played pretty well and it could have been a non-violent scenario but for my Kroot mercenary drawing a bad card when interrogating a local and being jumped by some gangers... which attracted the attention of the local Adeptus Arbites and things just spiralled out of control from there. I've include a selection of photos below for your viewing pleasure.

We're looking forward to the next game or two, maybe we'll be able to play once a month or so? That would be good. I might have to try my hand at writing a scenario!
Tylo, his hound and body guard surveying the scene...

My Inquisitor Tylo was set upon during his very first interrogation!
It took way too long for him to deal with the local toughs,,
which meant that he was unable to assist his faithful Kroot when it
was similarly indisposed.

Ross had this lovely gang of minis, sneaking around the
buildings instead of facing into things directly. Piss weak I say...
then again, he did a whole lot better than me! And I might be
a tad bitter...

Here's my Kroot getting shown how Emperor fearing citizens deal
with alien scum.

Carnage! There were locals, aliens, police... madness!

Selection Rules

Canticles of the Omnissiah: At the start of each battle round, pick which Canticle of the Omnissiah from the table below is in effect for the duration of the battle round. The same Canticle may not be picked twice during the same battle.

Alternatively, you can randomly determine which Canticle of the Omnissiah is in effect by rolling a D6 and consulting the table below. Note that if you randomly determine a Canticle, it takes effect even if the same Canticle has been in effect earlier in the battle.

1. Incantation of the Iron Soul:
You can re-roll failed Nerve tests for models in your kill team.

2. Litany of the Electromancer:
Roll a D6 for each enemy model within 1" of any models in your kill team at the start of the Fight phase. On a 6, that enemy model suffers 1 mortal wound.

3. Chant of the Remorseless Fist:
Re-roll hit rolls of 1 for models in your kill team in the Fight phase.

4. Shroudpsalm:
When an enemy player makes a roll for a shooting attack that targets a model from your kill team, and that model is obscured, that hit roll suffers and additional -1 modifier.

5. Invocation of the Machine Might:
Add 1 to the Strength characteristic of models in your kill team.

6. Benediction of the Omnissiah:
Re-roll hit rolls of 1 for models in your kill team in the Shooting phase. ()
