Transparent Bases on Minis

Recently at my Axes & Ales Gaming Club, I was enjoying a cold beer with some of the lads on a glorious Melbourne evening. Vivek Chandra was there and we were discussing the virtues of clear vs scenic bases on our miniatures.

As it happens, I bought some clear bases from Knights of Dice (a local Melbourne business - great stuff if you haven't seen it before) a while ago, but could never get them to work: pinning them gave the minis stiletto heels while using Superglue caused frosting on the base.

Viv suggested getting another glue - crystal clear stuff - and giving it a try. So I nicked off to Bunnings and bought a tube of Weldbond. But I was stumped: how do I my mini to balance on the base while the glue sets?

Then it occurred to me - why not flip it upside down? I filled an old tin with sand and stuck a painted mini in headfirst i.e. with its legs sticking up in the air like it was doing a handstand.  I put a dot of glue on both feet, then rested/balanced the acrylic clear base on top. Too easy! 24 hours later, I've got my first clear based mini and now I'm contemplating doing some more.

    1. Yeah, crazy how 'the solution' was so simple. A good reason why never to give up on a problem I say.
