My recent game of Rogue Planet (link) at Axes & Ales (link) lit a creative fire which was most welcome. I've found myself pondering rules, scenarios, looking at my miniature and terrain collection... maybe my C-19 paralysis has faded? I can only hope so.
Presently I'm pulling together a Rogue Planet House Rules expansion that I'm calling "Rogue Inquisitor" i.e. using Rogue Planet's mechanics to play out wargames set in the GWS's Warhammer 40,000 Inquisitor universe. I've already written over a dozen pages of rules and details, largely formalising my many and varied blog entries over the years.

| I've glitched it deliberately as it's very much a work in progress at present! |
I'm envisaging a complementary House Rules document, similar in style to the House Rules authored by Thibault Bloch, intended to be used in concert with Brent Spivey's core rules for Rogue Planet. I'm even trying to replicate the layout/style of the original - yes I've even tracked down Rogue Planet's distinctive font.Complementing the House Rules will be GWS-styled Faction Codexes (Codices?), that provide unit listings, details of any faction-specific rules and their equipment. I've made good progress on both Space Marines Codex and Eldar Codex. Why them? Well, I've always had a soft spot for space elves and Space Marines are simply iconic and of course they make for great adversaries. I'm also preparing a Inquisition Codex, featuring my well established Inquisitor Tylo Haariginer and retinue. It's certainly a lot easier drafting such things up when you've got firm characters in mind.
I don't intend to reflect and reengineering all the detail from W40K into this work - this is intended to take the flavour of the factions, especially those units that I particularly like, and have them ready to roll for a gaming session. To further illustrate where I'm currently at:
- The House Rules are currently 6-pages and include:
- A modified Turn Sequence and Skill Check resolution mechanics;
- Revision of Unit Credit Costs, Collisions, and Armour; and
- New, modified, and clarified Actions, Gear/Traits, Leader Commands and Spells/Casts.
- The Space Marine Codex is currently 3-pages and include:
- A Faction Trait employing a new mechanism, reflecting the indominable martial spirit of the Adeptus Astartes;
- Heroic Profiles including a Marine Sergeant and Librarian;
- Standard Profiles including Tactical, Assault, Support, and other profiles; and
- War gear detailing things like Bolters, Plasma Pistols etc with their full Rogue Planet stats.

Wow, amazing! looking forward to seeing more!!
ReplyDeleteThank you. Just the other day I played another game using these amendments with some mates at my local club. It went pretty well and the various resources I've created (cheat sheets, clarified rules etc) seem to be working well. Watch this space.
ReplyDeleteIs Rouge Inquisition complete?
ReplyDeleteWhen is a wargaming project ever complete? It is complete enough that we've had a few good games as of late. Next step is to prepare really attractive Unit Cards for the Factions - it makes such a difference to playing a game.
