Earlier this year (or was it late last?) I purchased a collection of good, old fashioned metal Servitors. The combination of work changes and lockdowns meant that they had languishing in various states of progress for a good portion of this year. Finally, with a final push, I've gotten the four of them to a complete-ish state - the most recent three in the picture below - enough so that they can exit the workbench and go on display in my cabinet.
There was nothing particularly clever involved with the painting, but sometimes simple, honest paint jobs, using standard paints is the best policy. Oh, I did employ a little artist medium 'just because' which might have made something of a difference, especially on Hansard. I am particularly happy with their heads - I feel like I got a good near-dead look happening, with just the right about of contrast between the skin, eyes and metal skull plates.
First up we have Bob, sporting this season's Heavy Bolter. The Bolter has been magnetised and had its barrel has been drilled out making it that little bit cooler than otherwise. Bob's backpack was sitting a bit proud, so after consulting with my hobby buddies, I filed the connection nub down and reset it. Now that it sits more flush on his back, the overall effect has improved. We like Bob. He shoots good.
Jimbo, with his electro whip and industrial can opener, is a rather dashing piece of repurposed Imperial meat. That dreamy gaze of his is 100% authentic, largely thanks to the knockout combination of his media star parents' good looks and the best lobotomy that Imperial science can provide.
Lastly, we have Trevor. The type of brain dead man robot that you can absolutely rely upon in a pinch. Well, make that two pinches thanks to his precision and man-sized nippers. If you are wondering why he wears a yellow one-piece jumpsuit, it's because he isn't much good with buttons. Zippers he can manage, but buttons just don't work for him. And as shoelaces were declared heretical, we're pretty safe on that front as well.
Enter Hansard. He/it was actually the first of the Servitors that I painted. I was particularly happy with the text on the scroll - it came out really well, especially when viewed in real life. That little urn on the ground is some sort of circuit board component. I am intending on going back and free-handing something onto it as some later date. Also, it occurred to me that I could include a Servoskull - one of the flying affairs - to add some more interest to the model. I've got one in production that is on a long-ish wire - I think I may add it flying around Hansard someday.
I pinned the %$#^#!@ out of the models as they are solid chunks of metal... seriously, each pin is a few millimetres long. The bases were made using drywall sanding pads (I used some earlier this year) which have been one of top hobby finds this year - they're dirt cheap, rough and the sizing is perfect. Various bits and pieces have been added for variety, however, I got a bit bored of painting them and moved on. I have a habit of pulling out old models while I am painting new ones and adding bits of detail etc, so the various pipes etc will likely see embellishments over time.
Finally, I have this lovely "twisted gestalt mind of tech priests". I can't take any credit for it whatsoever*. I entered a Covid-related charity raffle and won him/it as a prize 😀. All credit to a guy named Isaac Tobin of Weirdingsway for the inspired scratch-build and excellent paint job. I will have to see what I can do about including this beauty in a game before too long.
*except for some repairs! Within seconds of taking it out of the box and displaying it to my family, it took a catastrophic turn and hit the floor, breaking it into 3 or 4 pieces. It is a good thing that my pinning skills weren't overly rusty as I managed to bring him altogether without too much drama. Well, I will discount the rummage through the vacuum cleaner's bag after some miscommunication within the Berman household!

PS here are some extra photos

Love the kitsch intro for each mini, brought a smile to my dial :)
ReplyDeleteOh, and dropping a gifted mini....glad you were able to fix him.
I've see those sanding pads in the past, but never paid them any heed. When we come out of lockdown I'll be sure to check them out.
Take care mate :)
Thanks Pap - I'll share with you the details of those pads from Bunnings. I was kind of inspired to try some more minis now - it has been too long. Just last weekend I started working on some Cultists, even going as far as trying greenstuff (Emperor Forbid!). Watch this space and stay safe.
