The Sump Empress (Terrain) Part 3

Here's a look into the Empress's hold.
With how the Empress's hold is taking form, it was going to be hard to create and paint the interior.  So departing from my usual in situ build and paint method, I've instead created eight panels - 2 for each hull section - that can be fixed into place during assembly.

I started the build by cutting ~12x3cm strips of cardboard.  Then I raided my bits box(es) and stuck all manner of junk to the card using superglue.

There was little resizing - nothing my hobby knife and file couldn't handle - and the biggest challenge was trying to keep the detail relatively low.  Once I was happy with the composition, I liberally painted the panels with a 50/50 water/PVA + sand mix.  It wasn't as thick nor contained as much sand as what I used on my little boat, as the idea was to hint at corruption in the interior, drawback from suggesting the ship was un-sumpworthy.

Post magic mix, I sprayed them black, then used my recently acquired Aldi craft paints - starting with brown and working my way through orange, some white, then using some bronze (which is pretty translucent so not much good) and white again.  I picked out some spots of colour (red, yellow, blue) at the end and it was done.

I am actually delighted with this particular build.  If I had the mental fortitude, I could imagine building a whole Space Hulk using the same approach.  God, it would take forever but would look cool.  I think I just stick with my Sump Freighter for the moment 😉
