The cases are quite large - around 19x13x6-inches - and sturdy. Unlike some other tool cases I've acquired over the years, these are very robust with metal rod-reenforced latches and hinges. The split-lid feature is quite useful, allowing me to separate smaller, delicate pieces from the larger items.
| There's still a bit of space left. I might try making some new terrain pieces to fit flush, thereby getting the most out of the area. |
10-minutes with my multitool saw the insides chopped out, leaving a ~18x12-inch cavity that I went about filling it with some of my terrain pieces.
| On the right, I have stacked four 12-inch square boards stacked. The left side provides enough space for a decent mix of elements. |
As you can see, quite a lot fits in: plenty for a very dense 24x24-inch board.
I'm looking forward to giving this layout a try - maybe a

I think the project has merit, and I'm especially attracted to the idea of packing a table's worth of terrain in a single, relatively convenient case. So what next? If I can find the focus, I'll definitely clean-up the insides some - sand the rough bits back or maybe even melt them with some solvent? I suppose I could always line it instead - and then turn my attentions to the outside. Getting rid of the Makita logo would be a good start, and I am sure I could grimdark it down some - a paint job would make a world of difference.
And then there is box number two...
