Jain Zar (Eldar)

She is finished.  Basically three sessions, maybe 6 or so hours later, and I've completed* my first Phoneix Lord.  So what is there to tell?  Read on...

The body: jez, what did I do?  How does trial and error sound?  At one stage I ended up with most of the armour plates quite a light colour - might it have been my old Citadel Colour Bleached Bone - when I decided to try a Seraphim Sepia Shade in the middle.  Instead of trying to paint the edge highlights, I kind of left them and painted/washed the inside of the plate instead.  I think it largely worked and a 'cheat' I might have to try again.

The detail: I used The Army Painter Warpaints True Copper for the metallic trim then highlighted using Citadel Burnished Gold - I think it is the first time I've used gold with any success.  The mouths of the boot-goyles (?) was filled with Glistening Green, a Citadel metallic that I've had for 20 years (or more).  I used a fair bit of gloss to lift the shine on the metal, which worked well.

Watch out boys!
Her hair: was washed using Carroburg Crimson and then multiple layers of dry brushed reds and oranges.  I probably repeated the process four or five times.  My favourite dry brushing brush is getting a bit too curdy now, so sometimes it would lift paint off her head and I'd be forced to start again.  The end effect was great - I was especially pleased how it looks front-on.

The basing:   Jain Zar is on her tippy toes with two big chunks of lead holding her aloft.  I slowly built up the area around those chunks with superglue, builders sand and kitty litter (thank puss!) until they were obscured.  Then in a fit of inspiration, I filed down an old, previously painted space marine backpack and helmet and wedged them into the area.  Nothing like dancing over the bodies of your enemies I say!  That whole base was then washed with whatever I had lying around - I think I used a yellow at one point - and dry brushed with some very light greens.  Scenic base #2 ever: done.

In Kill Team I suspect I'll be playing her as the Howling Banshee Exarch (duh!) with the Executioner - making her 17 Points instead of 11.

In Rogue Planet/R40k she need be better again than the Banshee Exarch (of which I have two old metal models already) - the Exarchs lose the +1 vs Light Armour and instead get +1 vs Medium and +1 vs Shields, coupled with the extra CQ Point.  At 103 Points she's still less expensive than a Terminator largely on account of her ordinary DEF rating and Light Armour - mind you the Shield does help some there.  The Power Spear is a nasty piece of work giving her a +2 vs Medium and +1 vs Heavy Armour (watch out Terminators!) coupled with the auto +1 to normal Melee (vs Light), Armour Piercing and a Rogue Die.  Also, she can attack through a rank of models, which would make her particularly able to take out a high-value target.
